STORIES

Rose

The story of Rose Lwanyage is interesting. In '05 her husband died leaving her with a house, 1/2 acre lot and a large garden. The church came quickly to her assistance to protect her from clan (extended family) demands on her and her property.

She had operated a store up on the road and was paying heavy rent. With one less person in the house, the church deacons helped her transform a room of her house into a modestly equipped store (upper left) where she pays no rent and they collected money to put on a security door. She operates the store at a better profit than before, serving her neighbors, paying for household food. And can look after home things while managing the store.

There was a building just 20 paces from the house, but it needed repair and upgrading. TMP lent her a small amount to do that work on condition that as a rental it would pay the loan. She signed off on that and it worked out.

Her children helped her make enough bricks of the soil on the lot during the rainy season to add a second apartment to the first TMP lent her enough to put the roof on the second apartment on condition that its rent would pay the loan quickly. That too worked out. The result is a duplex, here pictured in a slide.

This story goes on with the rent from the second apt paying for the roof of the third, and the rent from the third to pay for the roof of the fourth. See the third apt with the red door (upper right) and the stack of bricks from which the fourth apartment will be built (in the slides).

Before all is over, Rose will have a few more apartments to rent out, making a decent living. Already the rentals pay school fees for a last son and university fees for her last daughter. She is a contributor to the church whose deacons are helping others in dire straits, like they helped Rose equip a bedroom to be her store. As the deacons assist others out of serious problems and into viable businesses, TMP hopes to have the ability to boost some of them too into profitability, into “doing something useful with their hands to take care of their own needs and to help others” (Eph 4:28).

Perhaps God would have you continue to support, or start supporting, a next like this one that propelled a widow out of poverty and trouble. We delight in working economic development through the church where a grace-centered approach to life and doctrine rescues people from eternal hell and danger on earth.
