I go to Uganda, East Africa each year. With Ugandans in 1999 I started an economic development service to work through their churches. My church in Carbondale, Illinois, which I served as pastor and now continue as its mission pastor, is the anchor church. We call the program The TentMaker Project (TMP). The name comes from Acts 18:3. TMP is a humanitarian Christian work that operates through qualified reformed churches in Uganda.
Our services is primarily micro-finance loans to boost existing tiny businesses including village farmers. We promote responsibility, lend to boost and they repay. Educational assistance is a smaller and related service.
Our services are focused in the capital city Kampala and in several isolated villages where there are church related schools. In Mpunge village the new church there – established by Kampala church leaders - has a primary school, with over 200 children through 7th grade.
We seek help with the neediest of them. Some of these 100 poorest children get only one meal a day. They cannot pay tuition, and so the teachers are under-paid. Thankfully, with 52 sponsored children so far, the teachers are getting a little more regular pay and the students are staying in school.
There are three most unhappy things: unpaid teachers, hungry students and drop-outs. $12 per month per child will often prevent these three unfortunate results.
Supporting 100 children comes to $1,200 per month. That amount will keep 7 regular teachers plus a head teacher and a care-taker man. Can you even imagine so much for so little?
Tell us what you can do.
TMP is church-based and is run by volunteers with minimal costs. Go with me to Uganda and see for yourself.
Consider using our web-site donation pages to make your monthly gifts automatic and keep our costs lowest. Otherwise send a check each month to cover village educational costs at $12 per month or $30 per month for two city schools.
