1. Under $250. These loans commonly go to farmers of one or two acres who grow corn, coffee, beans or other vegetables. The money usually enables the purchase of better seeds, fertilizer, tools or insect repellant.
2. From $250 - $500, for small retail general stores or service shops, including salons, food service businesses, or for animal raising (chickens, pigs, goats, etc).
3. $500 - $1,000, for apartment rentals (to help with roofing costs, etc.) or store facility improvements or equipment purchases.
Loans above $1,000 are rare. We do not compete with banks and therefore do not lend to folks who are finally able to present collateral and therefore qualify for a bank loan.
We charge a loan recipient an up-front fee of 2% of the face value of the loan. Usually that is figured in the pay-back agreement. We do not charge interest to our recipients because of their status as poor.
The TentMaker Project is sustained by a combination of loan repayments and donations by US churches and members. TMP covers the expenses of our Ugandan field workers (two of them) who are motivated to help the poor and who have their own private businesses that sustain themselves. Give thanks for their labors of love, expertise and compassion!
